Maruti Suzuki to Launch Centre of Excellence in Tribute to Osamu Suzuki
In a heartfelt homage to the legacy of Late Osamu Suzuki, Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) and Maruti Suzuki India Limited have jointly proposed the establishment of the Osamu Suzuki Centre of Excellence (OSCOE) in India. The announcement was made during a solemn remembrance event at Yashobhoomi in Delhi, attended by dignitaries, industry leaders, and members of the Maruti Suzuki family. Osamu Suzuki, who passed away on December 25, 2024, in Japan, was a transformative figure in India’s industrial history. His decision in the early 1980s to partner with the Government of India through Maruti Udyog Limited gave birth to Maruti Suzuki, which revolutionized personal mobility in India. Today, the company stands as the nation’s largest carmaker with over 40% market share, playing a pivotal role in the country’s automotive and economic growth.
To honour his immense contribution to Indo-Japanese industrial cooperation and India’s automotive self-reliance, the Government of India has announced that Osamu Suzuki will be posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honour. The proposed OSCOE will be developed in Haryana and Gujarat, two states with strong manufacturing footprints, and will act as a tribute to Suzuki’s vision of inclusive industrial progress, quality manufacturing, and people-centric innovation.
The Centre of Excellence will focus on enhancing capabilities of auto component suppliers across all tiers by providing world-class training, infrastructure support, and collaborative academic-industry programs. It will promote the Japanese manufacturing philosophy, particularly Osamu Suzuki’s emphasis on kaizen (continuous improvement), efficiency, and precision engineering. Through lectures, seminars, research collaborations, and skill development modules, the OSCOE will equip a new generation of engineers, technicians, and managers with globally competitive competencies, further boosting India’s manufacturing readiness.
More than just a training institute, OSCOE aims to serve as a national hub for manufacturing innovation, helping India improve its global positioning in automotive supply chains. It is envisioned as a driving force behind the goals of Make in India, Skill India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat. The Centre will also help scale up India’s supplier ecosystem to meet evolving demands in quality, technology, and sustainability, in alignment with Suzuki’s global standards.
By launching OSCOE, Suzuki Motor Corporation and Maruti Suzuki are not only honouring the memory of a remarkable leader but also reinforcing their long-standing commitment to India’s industrial progress.
