Mercedes-Benz Partners With Momenta On Robotaxi

  • Mercedes-Benz and Momenta are collaborating to develop a robotaxi experience based on the new S-Class.
  • Lumo intends to initially operate the shuttles in Abu Dhabi, with an option for other locations at a later date.
  • The MB.OS technology of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the decisive enabler.
  • Mercedes-Benz is also working on further Level 4 projects with other leading software technology companies.

Mercedes-Benz and Momenta have announced a partnership to develop a Level 4 autonomous robotaxi service using the new S-Class, with initial operations planned in Abu Dhabi through local mobility provider Lumo, a subsidiary of technology company K2. The automaker stated that the operating system technology of the new S-Class is the key enabler for the driverless shuttle service, with a broader rollout to additional locations in other markets intended following a test phase in Abu Dhabi.

K2 has received federal approval to begin operating autonomous vehicles in the UAE, with initial deployments starting in Abu Dhabi. Lumo will operate the future robotaxi fleet using S-Class test vehicles on Abu Dhabi roads.

The initiative complements Mercedes-Benz’s other Level 4 projects, some of which focus on the end-customer segment while others explore commercial applications. The automaker is also exploring further collaborations with industry partners, including potential development of a Level 4 robotaxi ecosystem based on Nvidia’s Drive AV platform.

In a statement, Joerg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement, said: “With a robotaxi S-Class, we raise the bar for automated mobility—always combining safety and comfort to set new standards for the industry and intelligent transportation worldwide.”

Mercedes-Benz has been the first international automaker to receive approval for Level 4 automated driving tests on designated urban roads and highways in Beijing, where S-Class models serve as test vehicles equipped with sensor arrays including lidar, radar sensors and cameras.
