Automakers See Strong SUV Sales in India in March Amid Economic Resilience

Driven by rising private consumption and a robust economy, Indian manufacturers announced impressive March sales numbers on Tuesday, especially in the SUV sector. Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Kia India were among the top performers, exhibiting remarkable rise in SUV sales.

The biggest automobile manufacturer in India, Maruti Suzuki India, witnessed an almost 4.5% increase in SUV sales in March 2025, selling 61,097 units as compare to 58,436 units in the same month the previous year. Maruti Suzuki’s total sales in March 2025 increased from 1,87,196 units in March 2024 to 192,984 units, a 3.1% YoY increase. In FY25, the firm reported its highest-ever yearly sales of 22,34,266 units, which included 3,32,585 units exported and 17,95,259 units sold domestically.

Mahindra & Mahindra also made significant strides in the SUV market, selling 48,048 vehicles in the domestic market in March — which is an 18 per cent growth. Overall, the company’s SUV sales, including exports, stood at 50,835 vehicles for the month. The company reported its highest-ever annual SUV sales of 551,487 units in FY25 — a 20 per cent growth compared to the previous year. Mahindra’s total vehicle sales in March 2025 stood at 83,894 units, showing a 23 per cent YoY growth. The company also launched its Electric Origin SUVs, which are witnessing strong demand. “The year ended on a very positive note with us selling over 5 lakh SUVs in the domestic market for the first time ever,” said Veejay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M Limited.

Kia India, which is well-known for its mass-premium products, reported 25,525 units sold domestically in March 2025, up 19.3% from 21,400 units sold in 2019. With 30% of sales, the Sonet continued to be Kia’s best-selling model. The Seltos, Carens, and Syros came next. Senior VP and Head of Sales and Marketing Hardeep Singh Brar of Kia, who highlighted the company’s emphasis on innovation and customer satisfaction as well as the tremendous response to the Kia Syros, expressed confidence in the brand’s future expansion.
