Coastal Protection With Fliegl Push-Off Technology

Coastal protection is a top priority, especially in times of increasing weather extremes. In Norddeich,  the  asphalt  covering  of  the dyke  was  therefore  renewed  after  it  had  been severely  damaged  by  wind  and  waves  for  30  years.  Cracks  and  an  insufficient  surface weight made comprehensive renovation necessary. Tell Bau GmbH, led by site manager Kilian  Efen, took  on  this  challenging  task  and relied  on  the thermally  insulated  push-off trailer (Thermo ASW) from Fliegl Bau-und Kommunaltechnik.

Precise asphalting on challenging terrain

Over a distance of 3.9 kilometers, nine centimeters of the old asphalt was first milled off and  then  18  centimeters  of  new  asphalt  was  laid -a  total  of  around  27,000  tones  of material. The work was completed within 18 paving days.

The particular challenge lay in the slope of the embankment, which was ten degrees on the bottom layer and up to 23 degrees in places on the top layer. Conventional tipper semi-trailers would have been exposed to a high risk of tipping on this steeply sloping terrain. This is where Fliegl’s Thermo ASWs proved their worth: thanks to their innovative push-off  technology,  the  transport  trailers  remained  stable  and  enabled  the  asphalt  to  be unloaded in a safe and controlled manner.

Highest quality thanks to thermally insulated push-off technology

A key advantage of the push-off technique is that the asphalt material is fed into the paver in    layers.    This    prevents    thermal    and mechanical  segregation  so  that  the  asphalt can be laid homogeneously and at a uniform mixing temperature. This contributes significantly   to   the   longevity   of   the   new asphalt surface -a decisive factor for the long-term protection of the coastline.

The Thermo ASWsfrom Fliegl haveproven to be a reliable solution for this demanding application.  They  not  only  enable  safe  working  on  difficult  terrain,  but  also  ensure  first-class asphalt quality, which makes the dyke resistant in the long term. The  successful  completion  of  this  project  proves  once  again  that  innovative  technology can make a decisive contribution to modern coastal protection.
