Tata Motors Anticipates Strong Demand Surge for Altroz AMT Variant

With the recent facelift of the Tata Altroz, the automaker has expanded its powertrain lineup by introducing an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) option—marking the fourth Tata model to receive this technology. The move signals Tata’s intent to cater to a wider audience seeking affordable automatic variants without compromising on fuel efficiency and performance.

The AMT variant is paired with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine, which continues to be the backbone of the Altroz portfolio. This engine delivers 84 bhp and 115 Nm of peak torque and is now available with both a five-speed manual and the newly introduced AMT across variants ranging from the entry-level Pure to the top-tier Creative S.

Growing Demand for Affordable Automatic Options

Speaking to CarWale, Tata Motors revealed that, within the 1.2 NA petrol segment, demand currently skews heavily towards the manual transmission. The DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission), offered in a different petrol variant, accounts for just 12% of the demand, while the manual dominates with an 88% share. Recognizing a gap for a more cost-effective automatic solution, Tata introduced the AMT to serve customers looking for the convenience of an automatic without the higher price tag of a DCT.

The company is optimistic that this strategic addition could significantly boost sales, expecting the AMT to account for up to 30% of the Altroz’s total sales volume in the future.

What About a CNG-AMT Combo?

While Tata Motors has not yet confirmed the launch of a CNG-AMT combination for the Altroz, company representatives hinted that such a variant could be considered if there is adequate market demand. Currently, the CNG option, although gaining traction, is only available with a manual transmission.

In terms of overall powertrain preferences for the Altroz, the 1.2-litre NA petrol engine remains the top performer, accounting for a substantial 55% of total demand. CNG follows at 35%, while diesel variants hold a 15% share. Interestingly, turbo-petrol models—despite their enhanced performance—account for just 10% of the petrol segment, with the NA petrol dominating at 90%.

Conclusion

Tata’s decision to bring the AMT to the Altroz aligns with broader industry trends showing growing customer preference for automatic transmissions in the premium hatchback segment, especially at accessible price points. As the brand evaluates future powertrain strategies, customer feedback and market response to the AMT will likely shape the next phase of the Altroz’s evolution—potentially including a CNG-AMT variant down the line.
